There are a few things you should do if you were to ever find yourself stranded on the side of the road, waiting for a tow truck to arrive. Once you have made sure to call and schedule assistance from a tow truck company, you will need to make use of your time by doing the following:

Put Out Emergency Flares

If you have a roadside emergency kit in your vehicle, it will most likely have some road flares in it that you can light and put behind your vehicle. Make sure that the flares are far enough away from your vehicle so that the on-coming traffic will notice the flares well before coming up on your vehicle. If you do not have any road flares to use, you will want to turn on your emergency four-way flashers. This is something you should do even if it is daylight. It lets over drivers know that your vehicle is experiencing trouble and it can help the two truck driver find your vehicle.

Gather Your Valuables

This is something especially important to do if your vehicle is going to be towed directly to a local auto repair shop. The owner and operator of the repair shop cannot be held accountable for any valuables you left in the vehicle so it is best to gather it all up so you can take it home with you. If you have called for a friend or family member to pick you up, simply place your things in their trunk. If they arrive before the tow truck, that is fine, but you should still wait until the tow truck driver arrives, as you need to confirm the drop-off location for your vehicle and you will need to pay for their services. If you do not have to pay anything because you happen to have towing coverage, you may still need to sign some papers.

Beyond that, you will want to make sure that you are waiting patiently for the tow truck driver to arrive. You do not want to be outside of your vehicle more than necessary, especially if you are parking along the side of a busy highway. Use the time to catch up on some social media scrolling on your phone or even just relax and enjoy any sights that there are to see. Remember, you are more in danger outside of the vehicle than inside of it.
