If you ever break down and call a tow truck, you might find yourself sitting there for a little bit before anyone arrives. It would be a good idea to use that time to your advantage. Here are some of the things you might want to think about doing while you wait for towing services:

Light Those Flares

If you have an emergency roadside assistance kit in the trunk of your vehicle, you probably have some flares. Place one of the flares several feet behind your vehicle. Then go several more feet away and place another flare. Add more if you have them. Just make sure that you are putting some distance between each one. Light them up one by one and vehicles heading your direction should be able to see the flares. This lets them know to be cautious because there's a vehicle in trouble on the side of the road.

Gather Fragile Items And Valuables

This is important because the vehicle may shake a little when it is first picked up by the tow truck. Fragile things could fall over and break. You will want to gather all of the fragile things and anything that has value or is of significant meaning to you and take them with you if you are going home and the vehicle is going to a mechanic's shop. This way you do not have to worry about any accidents happening with your things.

Arrange For A Separate Ride Home

If you plan to have the tow truck take your vehicle directly to the mechanic, you may still need a ride home. Call around to see if anyone can help you with a ride and show up before the tow truck does. This way, you won't have to ride to the mechanic's shop or wait outside for a ride.

Now that you have all of that in mind, you should have no trouble occupying a good bit of your time while waiting for a tow truck to arrive. Of course, you are going to need to make sure that you have an emergency roadside kit already in your vehicle since you never know when an emergency might happen. Also, try to keep a blanket, hand warmers, water, and some shelf-stable snacks in a container. This will help keep you warm and prepared to last a few hours in the cold should you ever break down in the middle of a freezing cold winter. It can take a little extra time for towing services to arrive when the road conditions are bad.
